Playing tennis in the summertime has many benefits. Along with wearing summer-appropriate men’s or womens tennis clothes, higher temperatures generally mean there are more details to consider while you play. Whether you’re enjoying a match or practice session indoors or outdoors, these tips can help you stay cool before, during, and after you play tennis this summer.
Before
Hydrate early: When you’re active during the summer, you sweat. To help your body better regulate its temperature, aim to drink plenty of fluids well before you step foot on the court. Then, continue hydrating during and after your match.
Wear the right materials: Warmer weather means wearing lightweight and breathable fabrics that keep you cool and comfortable. Look for quick-dry options like a tennis skirt or tennis tank top with moisture-wicking material that helps pull moisture away from your skin.
Avoid peak heat times: In the summertime, temperatures rise from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. when the sun’s rays are the strongest. If possible, schedule your matches or practice sessions for the early morning or later in the evening to limit your exposure to the warmest temperatures of the day.
During
Apply plenty of sunscreen: Outdoor matches call for long-lasting sun protection so you can focus on your game while minimizing the risk of sunburn. Opt for a sunscreen that offers broad-spectrum sun protection and is water resistant, so you’re still protected even after hours on the court.
Manage moisture with the right gear: Headbands and wristbands come in clutch to keep your face, eyes, and hands dry. Tennis caps and visors also help protect your eyes from the sun’s glare so you can keep your mind on the next winning shot. The fewer distractions you have to contend with on the court, the better you can play.
Take breaks: You know your body best, so be sure to listen to it. While playing an intense match or training hard may be exciting, it’s important to know your limits and allow your body a chance to rest. So, take breaks when you need them. Changeovers are a great opportunity to catch your breath and replenish with water or an electrolyte drink.
After
Check in with yourself: How are you feeling after your time on the court? Do you need 5 minutes of rest before starting your cool-down routine? Doing a quick head-to-toe body scan can be helpful to double-check how your body is doing and where you may need some extra support during recovery.
Refuel: Just because you’ve played the final point or completed your last drill doesn’t mean you’re home free. Refueling after an intense on-court session is just as important as proper hydration before your match. You can add electrolytes to your favorite cold beverage for an extra hydration boost or enjoy a snack.
Check your gear: How did your womens court shoe perform? Was your tennis apparel too tight, or did it not feel the way you expected it to as you moved around the court? If not, take it as your sign to upgrade your tennis apparel and shoes.
