Are you looking for drills to help you navigate the tennis court faster? Do you need to work on exploding off the line or stopping on a dime? The right drills can improve your speed and agility, helping you better respond to your opponent’s tactics. Lace up your Adidas court shoes and get ready to put in the work to get faster.
Explode Off the Line
Are you struggling with explosiveness off the line? This drill will help you with that. Literally. Set up an agility ladder on the court. Run through it, keeping your knees high and pulling them to your chest. Using the ladder means keeping light on your toes and moving fast, which is essential to your tennis game. It builds strength and endurance while stretching your glutes to help you take longer strides. If you really want a challenge and have a training partner, you can add a second drill, either as part of the ladder drill or after. While in an active stance, have your partner lob a ball in front of you and chase down the ball before it bounces twice.
Lateral Running
Put your Asics Gel Resolution shoes through their paces, testing their lateral stability with a lateral running exercise: alley shuffles. Start by standing in the middle of the doubles alley in a service return stance. Have your training partner or coach point left or right randomly. Shuffle quickly in that direction, moving both feet outside of the lines. Then, return to the middle, waiting for your next direction. Another option is to start at the baseline, middle court, same stance, and perform lateral runs to the alley and back.
Quick Stops
Being fast around the court is one thing, but you also need to stop as quickly as possible to hit a ball. Set two cones about four feet apart. Run two loops around them. Then, run across the rest of the length of the court. Lean forward to keep your center of gravity low, helping you take sharp turns without losing balance and falling. The further you lean, the more momentum you’ll have to help push you forward.
Faster Recovery
Recovery is about returning to position from the net and often requires quick rotations of your hips. An Adidas Barricade tennis shoe helps with torsional stability, giving you better traction when you rotate your hips. Start at the net with a hip turn, applying force to the ground and accelerating, with your partner pointing left or right again. Turn your hip in that direction and sprint to the back of the court. Do a few reps on each side, and then switch it up. Instead of running straight back, run laterally, at an angle, to the alley, as if you were going after a short overhead shot.
