4 Tennis Gear and Tips to Go from Beginner to Advanced

Maybe you started your tennis journey with a secondhand racquet and the first pair of shoes you saw on the shelf. But now, you’ve decided to stick with the sport, and it’s time to go from beginner to advanced. Get a Babolat Pure Aero racquet, lace up your new tennis shoes, and head to your local court ready to take your game to the next level. Here are four pieces of tennis gear to help improve your experience.

Get Better Shoes

The first time you played tennis, you might have worn running shoes. However, shoes specifically designed for the tennis court are made for the type of impact and lateral movements common in tennis. The Asics Gel Resolution X, for example, uses gel technology to help reduce the impact on your body from the abrupt stop-and-go movements tennis players experience. Typical running shoes aren’t designed for this. Since hard courts are the most common playing surface, tennis shoes are also made with durability in mind.

A Specialized Racquet

Did you buy a generic tennis racquet from a non-sports store? That’s fine when you are testing the waters to see if you like the sport, but once you’re locked in, you need a specialized option. There are a few categories of racquets, from power racquets with oversized heads to modern player’s racquets that focus on a heavy topspin playing style. Once you know how you want to play, you’ll be able to pick the right type of racquet for you. A Babolat Pure Drive racquet, for example, is a power racquet meant to overwhelm opponents, and it also features natural flax fibers to help you feel and control the ball.

Upgraded Strings

Most racquets out there are sold unstrung letting you choose your own strings. The four main types are monofilament, multifilament, natural gut, and synthetic gut. Natural gut is the most premium, offering the best tension maintenance and playability available. Monofilament polyester strings have become more popular with heavy topspinners and seasoned players. Next is multifilament, offering better control and comfort at high tensions and strong elasticity. It offers high power at lower tension. A middle ground is a synthetic gut, staying between the softness of natural gut and firmness of co-polyester. They hold tension better than multifilament or co-polyester. Monofilament strings are more durable but not for everyone. Use them only if you are breaking strings constantly.

Choosing a Favorite Court

Have you played on grass, clay, or hard courts? Try each one to see which is your favorite. Clay courts cause the ball to slow down but result in a higher bounce, making for longer rallies. It’s great for players who use lots of spin and play the angles. The French Open is played on clay courts. Hard courts give you an all-around experience. Speed of play is generally faster than clay but not quite as fast as grass. The Australian and US Opens are played on hard courts. Choose grass courts, the famous surface at Wimbledon, if you enjoy playing with a quick pace and low bounce, keeping rallies shorter. Serves are a key part of playing on grass court tennis.
